Have you ever heard these statements before?
- “The eye is NOT only a camera”
- “Artificial blue light is a retinal toxin”
- “The Eye has a microbiome”
- “Health begins in the eyes…. with proper sun signaling”
- “Our Eyes are Hormone making Organs”
These were 5 Paradigm Shifting Quotes from Dr. Valerie Giangrande that we captured in Episode 10 of the Quantum Healthy Podcast. We quizzed Valerie on these during the interview and learned a ton. With her explanations, we were both satisfied to quote her on each of these. This is the first of 4 blog posts in a series I am calling Quantum Vision. There was too much I learned and want to share with for 1 post.
Who is Dr. Valerie Giangrande? How did she find Quantum Biology?
She is an optometrist and in private practice for over 20 years in New York, USA. Inspired by her young son’s presenting neurological issues and her own health issues, she became frustrated with her conventional medical care and became more holistic in her quest to help both of them overcome their issues. In 2016, she became certified as an Integrative Holistic Nutrition Health Coach. In 2018, a functional medicine practitioner introduced her to Quantum Biology and the work of Neurosurgeon Dr. Jack Kruse.
After realizing how crucial Quantum Biology foundational principles of light water and magnetism are to overall health, including eye health, she has incorporated these principles into her personal life and educated patients in her practice ever since.
She became certified as an Applied Quantum Biology Practitioner and in her spare time, works with people who want help with Quantum or Circadian Rhythm strategies, as it relates to ocular health and overall wellness.
Why is Dr Giangrande also known as The Quantum Eye Doc?
She looks at eye health through the lens of quantum biology. She is prolific on her Instagram account of that name, attempting to educate the lay person both graphically and through simple explanations. I strongly recommend giving @QuantumEyeDoc a Follow if you want to grow old with great vision.
This is an “eye opening” episode!
There are so many takeaways. Anyone with the following will benefit from listening:
- ️You wear glasses, contacts, blue blockers, or sunglasses
- ️You have eye issues of any kind
- ️You have had some kind of eye surgery in the past
- You have eyes and live in this modern world where we around bombarded with artificial light

Our eyes are an extension of our brain
They play a critical role in circadian biology because this is the organ that takes in the light signal, then sending it to the pea-sized nuclei in the brain called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). This is our master clock in the hypothalamus. We cover this topic in my Quantum Biology 101 workshop (available for purchase by contacting me here).
Did you know that there are 7 Main layers to the eye?
1. Tear Film
2. Cornea
3. Pupil
4. Lens
5. Vitreous
6. Retina
7. Optic nerve
Does Artificial Blue Light at Night (ALAN) hurt our eyes?
Yes. This came up several times during the discussion and she is a fan of blue blockers and/or changing your ambient lighting to less blue as the evening progresses. Recall she said: “Artificial blue light is a retinal toxin”. It breaks the weak covalent bond between Vitamin A and our photoreceptors. Loose Vitamin A goes rogue and wreaks havoc in the body including destroying our visual and non-visual photoreceptors! It also destroys DHA in your eye and elsewhere, including cell membranes. This affects your DC current in the body. I have a workshop called The Blue Light Protocol (available for purchase by contacting me here) that includes a handout on all the ways I have found blue light harms our health. Ignorance is not bliss on this visible non-native EMF.
Which of these 7 layers of the eye above are negatively affected by ALAN?
Sorry – but you will have to listen to the episode to hear the answer she gave us. But you might want to consider blue blockers when you hear the answer – here is a discount link to my ultimate blue blockers and for My Hearty Unbreakable Favourites (use Coupon Code for both “LKWellness”).
How can Sunlight Deficiency hurt our health and eyes?
It goes back to her infamous quote “Our Eyes are Hormone making Organs”. Without lots of natural Infrared and Ultraviolet (UV) light, we don’t benefit by helping make and expand our Exclusion Zone (EZ) Water, build collagen, and help Nitric Oxide (NO) production etc. and help us sleep. When we get to the eye conditions in this blog series, this will become crystal clear. She reminded us that “the eye is equipped to handle full spectrum sunlight”
“Our Eyes are Hormone making Organs “
From Dr Giangrande: “What do you think happens to these hormones when we don’t get full spectrum sunlight through our eyes? We have non- visual photoreceptors in the eye. They are waiting for light signals to stimulate hormone-making activity. Melanopsin waits for blue to set circadian rhythm and stimulate cortisol production and Pro-opio-melano-cortin (POMC) and other processes. Neuropsin and amino acids, such as tyrosine and tryptophan, are waiting for UVA to start making really important hormones IN THE EYE…”
POMC, if you have not heard of it yet is the precursor to 5 prohormones we rely on: ACTH, CLIP, Lipotropin, Beta Endorphin and MSH (which then makes alpha, beta and gamma MSH). POMC essentially translates into ocular melanin which will come clearer in the blog on Melanin and the eye in the series. Hopefully you can see how important POMC is and also UVA light through our eyes!!
These non -visual photoreceptors (eg Neuropsin) also make our neurotransmitters. Do you still think it’s a good idea to block full spectrum light living indoors and wearing sunglasses all day?
Implications of Modern Optometry/Ophthalmology interventions with our eyes
We grilled Dr Giangrande on: Sunglasses, Blue Blockers, Eye Exams, Corrective Eyewear (Glasses, Contacts), and Corrective Surgery (Cataracts, Lasik). She had so many useful and insightful tips to help us understand how to use these interventions wisely.
Post Lasik Considerations
I had this 25 years ago. Lasik surgery thins the cornea to help the shape of the eye to improve myopia (nearsightedness). The cornea is where we have the non-visual photoreceptor Neuropsin.
3 immediate implications of Lasik surgery:
1. A thinner cornea means less Neuropsin for capturing UVA light.
2. When photoreceptors like Neuropsin are damaged, Vitamin A is released
3. With a thinner cornea, this allows more damaging blue light to pass through to the retina
3 considerations for Lasik Surgery clients:
• optimizing your Circadian Rhythm
• Getting as much safe sun exposure on Eyes and skin to Sunrise, UVA rise UVB and sunset light
• Blocking blue light indoors and especially at night
Conclusion
Beyond all the biochemistry we know about our eyes, Quantum Biology is showing us that “The eye is NOT only a camera” but is also a timekeeper. It contains a layer called the RPE (Retinal Pigmented Epithelium) that contains melanin that collects light. And it too has clock cells.
“The body runs on Time based on sunlight”
This for me was the biggest takeaway from this interview. When you pair it with this quote, I heard today from Dr Jack Kruse: “Time controls the energy flow in matter”, we realize that timing in the body means a lot more that we currently understand and the eye is critical to optimal timing.
Dr Giangrande highlighted this for us when she spent her valuable TIME with us for this interview. She, my podcast co-host Andeea and I and other Quantum Health coaches are here to inspire you to take care of your eyes, not just because of your vision but for that clock – as your health depends on it. I do this mainly through my 1:1 and Group Quantum Health coaching – these new services are coming soon on my website.
