Myopia, Dry Eyes, Photophobia, Floaters, Posterior Vitreous Detachment (PVD), Cataracts, Advanced Macular Degeneration and Glaucoma. What do they have in common? A lot more than you think when you view them through the quantum lens. Poor circadian rhythm and the light you put your eyes in is definitely a common denominator according to the Quantum Eye Doc, Dr. Valerie Giangrande interviewed on Episode 10 of the Quantum Healthy Podcast. It is an “eye opening” and yet hopeful episode! Keep reading for the links & timestamps for the brand-new episode!
Who Is The Quantum Eye Doc?
Dr. Valerie Giangrande is an optometrist in New York, USA. She looks at eye health through the lens of quantum biology. She graced us with her time to educate us on Quantum Vision and shared so many novel insights with us on today’s common eye conditions. Be sure to hear/watch the full episode as this article barely touches the surface and is meant to inspire your curiosity.
Myopia
This is near-sightedness. She has an enlightening Instagram (IG) Post titled: “ALAN & lack of Full Spectrum sunlight contributes to Myopia progression by decreasing dopamine production causing elongation of the eyeball”. ALAN is an acronymm I use alot – Artificial Light at Night. This ALAN is not your friend. If you are on IG – I recommend following The Quantum Eye Doc and learning from her posts and finding this one.
She also mentioned that those with myopia were at greater risk of retinal detachment and PVD (see below). Best you check that out to learn more in addition to what she said on this podcast interview. If you are considering Lasik surgery for your Myopia, she comments on this and it is covered in Quantum Vision – Part 1 of this Blog series.
Dry Eyes
Signs of Dry Eyes
- Not enough tear production
- Clogged oil gland/poor oil secretion
- Too much /too little mucous production
Symptoms of Dry Eyes
- Burning, Tearing, Redness, Sand/gritty, Pain, fatigue, intermittent blur
Quantum Causes of Dry Eyes
- Disrupted Circadian Rhythm
- The UVA receptor – Neuropsin
- Hormone dysregulation
- Health issues
- Medication side effects
- Low melatonin
- Blue light Toxicity (BLT)
Dr G said “Sure, eye drops can help you feel a bit better, temporarily. But, to really treat dry eyes, you have to fix your environment first. Circadian rhythm, and all the things associated with that, go a long way.” Here is one of her posts referring to this:

When we are on our screens, we should always have blue blockers. Here are two of my favourites: Viva Rays or Midwest Red Light Therapy (use my coupon code LKWellness) or at minimum, a software like Iris Tech. Use the 20-20-20 rule – every 20 minutes stare 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Or get off your screen that stops our blinking reflex.
Photophobia
“It’s more of an aversion to sunlight and it is rampant today. Most commonly found in people who spend most of their time indoors on screens, all day and night. And, when they go outside, they ALWAYS wear sunglasses, because they cannot handle ANY natural sunlight. This becomes a vicious cycle. Lack of full spectrum sunlight, especially in the early morning, is contributing to the problem, as well as artificial light at night. “ (Dr G)
Gamers are a prime example. And I just heard it will be a new Olympic sport. The Olympic committee does not understand Quantum Biology whatsoever or they would never have made that stupid decision. Yes, I am calling it stupid – because it’s literally a prescription for sitting disease and blue light toxicity. You will have no problem spotting these future overweight or skinny fat Olympians wearing their sunglasses (photophobic) and early cataracts from the harm they have done training for their Olympic “sport”. The Ancient Greeks are rolling over in their graves with that ill-thought decision. I fear even more now for the future of humanity. OK done with my rant.
Is there hope for Photophobia?
Absolutely. “People with blue eyes are naturally more sensitive to sunlight due to less pigmented melanin in the iris, but it is still crucial to get early morning sunshine through naked eyes. It is also crucial to get some early morning UV A through naked eyes. Just be outside at those times. Wear a hat if it’s too bright— at least get your eyes outside to get the correct sun signaling.
Try to build up slowly by getting more of the less intense sun early in the day. And BLOCK artificial blue light at night!! I tell patients to start with a few minutes of sunrise light without sunglasses and continue to build up slowly. I also tell them to get night blue blockers ASAP.” (Dr G)
Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD)
This common condition occurs when the back portion of the vitreous detaches completely from the retina. Most posterior vitreous detachments do not cause any problems. However, if the vitreous only detaches partially, the vitreous can still pull on the retina. You can develop a vitreous hemorrhage, retinal tear, or retinal detachment when this happens.
It’s a common condition with age. PVD can cause floaters or flashes of light, which you may ignore over time. Posterior vitreous detachment isn’t painful or sight-threatening. But you should see an eye specialist right away to make sure you don’t have another retina problem.
Its more common with myopia – which as Dr G mentioned above “Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) & lack of Full Spectrum sunlight contributes to Myopia progression by decreasing dopamine production causing elongation of the eyeball”.
Cataracts
What are they? Collagen proteins get cloudy and start to block light.
A Cataract Causation Myth
The myth is that UV light is the sole cause of cataracts. Cataracts are not only caused by too much UV light. The cause is unbalanced oxidizing light and oxidative stress. Some sources she mentioned:
- Blue Light
- nnEMFs
- Smoking
- Diabetes
Specific Quantum Causes of Cataracts
- Circadian disruption – with related health issues, medications and their side effects
- Mitochondrial Dysfunction – from oxidative damage
- Blue Light Toxicity (BLT) = lack of red and Infrared (IR) light. We are not meant to be exposed to bright blue light all evening
- Cellular dehydration – leads to collagen dehydration. This is not fixed by just drinking more water. A Quantum Biology coach will best inform you on how to get your subcellular mitochondria to make more metabolic water to truly hydrate
- Sunglasses – block full spectrum light causing UV light deficiency
- Infrared (IR) deficiency – causes dehydration and this affects collagen in the lens. Red light is protective but note that welders can get damage from too much red
- Low melatonin and poor sleep (which usually co-exist)
- Low Vitamin D
From Dr Giangrande: “In this modern world, many people are no longer spending time outside all day. Instead, we are spending hours upon hours on screens, absorbing artificial blue light through our eyes. Artificial light, that is unbalanced by red, is damaging for many reasons. We are not meant to absorb this foreign light all day. The collagen of the lens has to absorb all of the light that enters our eye and will eventually get cloudy due to the harsh effects of this light. For more information, check out my video on YouTube at Quantum Eye Doc”
A Cataract Unknown Truth
Current cataract surgery will stop UV light from passing through your eyes because the replacement lens they currently use block UV light. Of course, when you lose your vision to a cloudy lens, surgery may be inevitable. But there are health implications to the UV-blocking lenses they put in your eye because we are designed to have UV light enter our eyes. Remember we were not born with sunglasses on. We discussed this. Yes there are times for sunglasses when UV light is too strong – e.g. at altitude, on highly reflective surfaces like snow and water.
Laura’s 2 Cents on Cataracts
After measuring microwave ovens as part of the Global BRAG project, I learned there may be more truth to the conspiracy theory that microwaving is linked to cataracts. The levels were so high within a 1 metre range. If you value your health (which includes eye health), I do not recommend standing in that range when microwaving food.
I am currently reading Overpowered by Dr Martin Blank. Page 90 details Dr Milton Zaret’s research on microwave cataracts. “Unlike normal cataracts, which form toward the front of the eye, Zaret explained that microwave cataracts form on the posterior capsule at the rear of the eye (because microwave radiation can reach through the eye). These cataracts could develop from chronic low levels of MW exposure, not just from strong exposures”
Floaters
Floaters means floating small black shadows in front of the eyes. The vitreous layer (mentioned and pictured in Quantum Vison – # 1 in this blog Series) is made of a special gel: collagen hyaluronic acid and water. The floaters are the effect of vitreous liquefaction or detachment. These symptoms occur from changes in the vitreous. Eye floaters are usually nothing but an annoyance. They are common and usually harmless. I spent more time on these floaters below as I found them fascinating and they seem to be so common today.
Common Symptoms of Eye Floaters
Eye floaters can take on many forms. Some of these different shapes include:
- Cobwebs
- Black, grey, or translucent dots
- Worm-like strands
- Ring or partial ring
- Shadow in the vision
- Blurry spot in the vision
You may notice the floaters more when looking at a white background or a blue sky. Most people find floaters annoying, but they rarely interfere with vision unless the floater is large or dense. Some people also see light flashes if the vitreous tugs on the retina. This symptom often occurs when the vitreous first starts to loosen and detach itself. This may or may not cause further complications.
Six Causes of Eye Floaters
- Aging
- Eye infection
- Bleeding in the Eye
- Cataract Surgery-A cataract forms in the eye lens, which sits adjacent to your vitreous. Cataract surgery can disrupt your vitreous and retina. The ultrasound waves used to break up the cataract during surgery increase your chances of floaters.
- Eye Medication
- Myopia (nearsightedness) people typically have longer eyeballs. This elongation puts stress on your retina as the tissue thins and stretches outs. This stretching can also cause the vitreous attachments to loosen, increasing the risk for floaters.
Potential Risks of Eye Floaters
Floaters are typically harmless and don’t signal vision loss. In rare cases, they can also be a sign of vision-threatening complications. Make an appointment with your ophthalmologist if your eye floaters worsen over several months as this could be connected to an underlying condition.
Some eye diseases and conditions associated with floaters include:
- Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD)
- Retinal holes or tears
- Retinal detachment
- Vitreous hemorrhage
Several eye conditions can cause blood to leak into your vitreous.
Some of these include:
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Retinal tears
- Posterior vitreous detachments
- Hypertensive (high blood pressure-related) retinopathy.
- Patients with a vitreous hemorrhage may report floaters and often see blurry or red spots in their vision.
- Migraines
- Uveitis (inflammation of the middle of the eye)
- Hemorrhaging
- Eye injury
- Torn retina
Quantum Causes of Eye Floaters:
- Blue Light toxicity: too much energy for vitreous to absorb
- Circadian disruptions
- Mitochondrial dysfunction
- Oxidative damage and dehydration
- Cellular/collagen dehydration also from lack of Infrared, blue light and Wi-Fi exposure
- Poor Lymph flow
Summary on Floaters
These are an indication of the collagen and hyaluronic acid separating from the retina as I understood it. Once this has happened, Dr Giangrande explained it’s like Humpty Dumpty – it “can’t be put back together again”. Once you have them, they tend to fall to the bottom of your eye – think of a snow globe. Only when shaken will you see them.
Macular Degeneration (AMD)
The Macula (fovea) is an area in the retinal where light causes us to see in most detail . It occurs when cells get damaged and start to leak fat called drusen. If there is too much drusen, there is damage: fluid leakage/blood vessel formation. All of this leads to a loss of central vision.
Quantum Causes of Macular Degeneration
- Circadian disruption – with associated health issues
- Mitochondrial Dysfunction – causing damaged retinal health
- Blue Light Toxicity (BLT)
- Blue light hits photoreceptor and it separates Vitamin A; free Vitamin A is toxic to the cells.
- DHA (Omega 3 fat) is also damaged by Blue Light
- Higher chance in those with sugar dysregulation. BL causes spikes in blood glucose.
- Lack of Nitric Oxide from lack of UVA light. Poor blood flow, lack of nutrients
- Lack of UVA light: causing lower dopamine & lower melanin. This makes me wonder about downstream ramification of cataract surgery with UV blocking lenses?
- Cellular dehydration/lack of electrical current
- Lack of Red & IR light – Red light is protective; IR regenerates
- Low Vitamin D
- Lack of melatonin:
- Melatonin is protective of mitochondria (For the Science Geeks like me: it keeps the respiratory spacing in the Electron Transport Chain)
- Low melatonin = sleep disruptions, retinal cells cant regenerate at night
Glaucoma
Signs and Symptoms of Glaucoma
- Eye pressure is too high, causes permanent damage to the optic nerve
- Damage leads to tunnel vision and blindness
- Sometimes eye pressure is normal, damage to from poor blood flow to the eye
- No symptoms unless advanced
Dr G shared Ophthalmologist Dr Jerry Tennant’s theory of glaucoma related to poor lymph flow taken from his book.
It goes something like this (but best to read the book! I have only read his other Healing as Voltage book):
- Lymph needs to flow out of eye.
- If flow is insufficient, there is an increase in toxins which increases pressure.
- So lowering the pressure with drugs can make it worse (if you don’t fix the lymph I believe) and harder to get the toxins out.
Quantum Causes Glaucoma
- Circadian disruption
- Health issues that affect blood flow: Hypertension, Diabetes, sleep apnea, migraines
- Lack of melatonin. Damaging to optic nerve
- Lack of Red light – causes a lack of nitric oxide in mitochondria
- Lack of UVA light – causes a lack of nitric oxide (blood flow) through vasodilation = lower dopamine/lower melanin
- Mitochondrial Dysfunction – optic nerve cells are susceptible to damage as they have mitochondria too!
- Low Vitamin D
- Cellular dehydration
- Poor lymph flow
Glaucoma and Melatonin Connection
Low melatonin has been associated with increased risk of glaucoma progression. We make melatonin when our eyes are exposed to early morning sunshine (UVA). We release melatonin when the eyes sense 2 hours of total darkness at night. Melatonin helps the mitochondria repair and clean up our cells overnight. It protects brain cells, including the optic nerve. Lack of full spectrum morning sunlight and artificial Blue Light at night (ALAN) disrupts melatonin production and release.
So what is the glaucoma prevention prescription?
Maximize UVA light and block blue light to optimize melatonin to protect the optic nerve.
She also explained how Full spectrum UVA sunshine through our eyes and skin helps with nitric oxide production and this can actually help lower eye pressure in glaucoma.
Dr Giangrande: “Quantum Biology (circadian) principles and the work of Dr. Jerry Tennant have changed the way I think of eye health overall, especially glaucoma. It’s just fascinating. Sunshine is a nutrient, providing the source of power or voltage we need to function properly. Obviously, there are other factors at play, but the foundation of health requires being in sync with nature.”
What do Exclusion Zone (EZ) water and Lymph flow have to do with Glaucoma?
“You guessed it… sunlight!! Full spectrum sunshine through our eyes and skin can actually help lower eye pressure in glaucoma. Ultraviolet light causes nitric oxide release. This dilates blood vessels and lowers pressure and has been found to also lower eye pressure in a protective way. Red light also liberates nitric oxide from cytochrome C oxidase in the mitochondria (so more EZ water can be made). Sunshine for the win again and again!!” (Dr G – if I recall correctly)
Conclusion
Many eye diseases are made worse by poor circadian rhythm, low melatonin, low Vitamin D, cellular dehydration and mitochondrial dysfunction and many of these are caused by lack of full spectrum sunlight, too much blue light and other non-native EMFs.
