How do I practice cold therapy regularly?
Its different by seasons:
• Summer – cold showers
• Fall – longer river swims
• Winter – cold river dipping & cold exposure while X Country skiing
• Spring – shorter river dips and increasing cold river swims
Build Your Practice with Care
I have been building to this since 2019. Some people start with just the wrists in a bowl of cold water and graduate to a face dunk. The latter provides the benefits due to the mammalian dive reflex. Embracing the uncomfortable is hard but it pays off. I have learned there are limits with it and essential safety practices. Jacob explains the key tips in this episode.
Wim Hof Method
I encourage a course or workshop like the Wim Hof Method. Jacob Mark was my instructor and I am forever grateful for all he has taught me. He affirms that cold therapy does not mean you need to go polar plunging straight out of the gate.
Less need for Caffeine!
My podcast partner Andeea shared that she is also experiencing less of a need for coffee after her face cold dunking. To quote her “which is a very odd experience when you go for years and years needing that cup of coffee in the morning.” I personally have looked to dark chocolate for that “upper” when I have deadlines to finish. I am learning I just need to take a cold 2-minute shower as the effective and less wired alternative.
The Benefits of Cold Therapy
Cold Therapy has helped me both physically and mentally. My circulation has improved and I look forward to winter and my cold plunges in nature to negatively charge my body. Mentally, I can handle stress more effectively. It has brought me joy and motivation and why I joke its my “Happy Pill”, “drug of choice” and “favourite dopamine hit”! Why am I experiencing these things?
Cold therapy helps boost dopamine and this is the neurotransmitter responsible for motivation! BTW Andeea (a long time addiction counselor) has taught me that if you are in recovery from addiction, this is critical! Cold therapy has many more benefits than that though:
Cold therapy has many more benefits than that though:
▲ Increase burning of white fat
▲ Activates brown fat
▲ Mitochondria create heat
▲ Helps adapt you to cold
▲ Hormonal balance (leptin; thyroid; testosterone)
▲ Boosts metabolism
▲ Improves immune system
▲ Muscle recovery
▲ analgesic
▲ Lowers inflammation
I have personally documented 47 Scientific Reasons to Cold Plunge so far. One day I will finally write that blog article. At least I finished the workshop version.
Let me know if you try it and where you start! And what you thought of this INSIGHTFUL episode. You will want to share this one if you are a parent of a young man like the “younger Jacob” he describes so vulnerably here for us all to learn from.
