You’re electric. Your body runs on voltage, and staying healthy means staying negatively charged. Here’s what nobody tells you: polyester and synthetics generate a static positive charge, quietly working against your body with every wear.
Your Clothes Should Heal You
Andeea and I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Andrea Crouse who figured this out decades ago. She’s the founder of Gaia Conceptions—designer, seamstress, and dyer working alongside three women to create bespoke clothing that’s as intentional as it is beautiful.
Her path wound through festivals, sculpture, India, and a self-taught mastery of natural dye gardens before becoming what it is today: a made-to-order clothing line using organic materials, locally sourced where possible, with full transparency on every step.
The dyes alone will change how you think about what touches your skin. Conventional dyes are plastic—petrochemical endocrine disruptors hiding on “organic cotton” shirts. Andrea’s palette is a living pharmacy:
- indigo and madder for grounding,
- pomegranate and iron for antimicrobial protection,
- sandalwood and fusticwood carrying ancestral plant energetics.
The word mordant comes from the Latin mordere—”to bite.” The dye literally bites into the fabric. This is 3,000-year-old technology.
Made for You, Not a Landfill
Each garment is cut, sewn, and dyed to order. No warehouses. No exploited labor. The tag tells you who made it. Scrap fabric gets sheet-mulched into gardens or transformed into new textiles.
Andrea puts it plainly: “We are not for you if you want cheap and fast.” A $30 pair of leggings carries sad energy—someone didn’t get paid. Do you really want to wear that?
Healing clothes. Wearing Gaia is like drinking medicine. Ok maybe that is an exaggeration but you get the idea. This interview really challenged me to relook at my closet. I have been swapping polyester for cotton and linen at my favourite second hand stores. The dyes are not to Gaia Conceptions standards but it is a step in the right direction. When I met Andeea in person recently at Return to Nature retreat in Tennessee, she proudly modelled one of her Gaia Conception outfits. I totally get now how special this clothing line is.
