Ep 47 – Clockwork Blue:The Healthy Light Diet You Need with Dr Martin Moore-Ede

October 15, 2025 Laura Kissmann Leave a Comment

Could Your Light Be Harming Your Health?

Modern humans spend close to 90% of their time indoors, a radical departure from the natural light environment that shaped our biology. Increasing evidence demonstrates that artificial light—particularly blue-rich light at night—has profound effects on circadian rhythms, metabolism, mood, and cancer risk.

In this episode of the Quantum Healthy Podcast, Andeea and I spoke with Dr. Martin Moore-Ede, M.D., Ph.D., one of the world’s leading experts on circadian rhythms and the health impacts of light. Dr. Moore-Ede, formerly a Harvard Medical School professor, led the team that identified the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the master circadian clock in the brain. Yes, we were speaking with a legendin our field!  His most recent book, The Light Doctor, explores how the design of modern electric light has created a silent epidemic of circadian disruption—and what solutions are now within reach.

Light, Circadian Rhythms, and Health

The circadian system regulates nearly every aspect of physiology, from sleep-wake cycles to hormone release, metabolism, and cellular repair. Its primary synchronizer is light exposure, particularly in the 440–495 nm blue wavelength range.1

  • Daytime blue light strengthens circadian alignment, promotes alertness, and improves metabolic regulation.5,6
  • Nighttime blue light suppresses melatonin, impairs glucose tolerance, and increases the risk of hormone-related cancers.2,3,7

Indeed, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified night-shift work involving light at night as a probable carcinogen (Group 2A), citing strong evidence from both animal and human studies.4

Key Findings Discussed in the Episode

  1. Cancer Risk – Exposure to light at night disrupts melatonin, a hormone with potent oncostatic properties. Epidemiological data link higher rates of breast and prostate cancers to circadian disruption.2,3,4,6
  2. Metabolic Health – Blue-rich light at night promotes hyperglycemia and insulin resistance, while emerging evidence shows red and infrared wavelengths may improve glucose metabolism.7,8,9
  3. Mental Health – Studies in psychiatric hospitals demonstrate that appropriately timed morning light accelerates recovery and reduces hospital stays.13,14
  4. Addiction and Behavior – Blue light overstimulation acts as a stressor, while reduced outdoor exposure to natural full-spectrum light correlates with higher rates of depression and substance use disorders.10,11,12
  5. Environmental Impact – Beyond human health, light pollution disrupts biodiversity, altering food webs and contributing to declines in insect, bird, and aquatic populations.15,16

Engineering Healthy Light

Dr. Moore-Ede emphasizes the need to rethink lighting design:

• Daytime targets: >20 µW/cm² of 480 nm “sky blue” light.
• Nighttime targets: <2 µW/cm² of 440–495 nm blue light.

Spectrally engineered circadian lighting—dynamic bulbs that mimic the natural solar cycle—are emerging as viable solutions. But systemic adoption requires both consumer awareness and regulatory change.

Key Insight

“If you see blue, it’s day. If you don’t see blue, it’s night.” – Dr. Martin Moore-Ede

Call to Action

Healthy lighting is not just a wellness preference—it is a public health imperative. To protect circadian health, Dr. Moore-Ede and colleagues have submitted a petition to the U.S. Department of Energy to establish a new class of “general wellness” light bulbs. In addition to my weekly Quantum Radiance Collective private membership group coaching, recording and blogging this podcast, facilitating sauna and Access Consciousness Bars sessions, and boarding a dog occasionally, I get out of the office to teach 2 fitness classes a week at Anytime Fitness.  If you are local to Carleton Place, Ontario, Canada – you can get a guest pass and join us:

And next week, I am off to the Annual Lifewave Conference in Anaheim, California to learn as much as I can about this exciting new part of my business.  I recently made Director and if you see me wearing a small white patch somewhere on my body, I am quietly doing “stem cell” phototherapy.  When I am at the conference, I will potentially meet many in the Quantum Biology space who are equally excited about this health opportunity.  This includes my podcast partner Andeea who I will meet for the first time!  And it gets better…..Elton John is giving the conference a private concert!  This should give you an idea of how successful this company is, primarily since they released the x39 patch that in simple terms reflects our own body heat to stimulate our mitochondria to upregulate a Copper peptide that stimulates dormant genes   To learn more, read my blog article: Ep 33 – The Power of Age Reversal in a Lifewave Patch with Dr Rachel Maurice

Ep 47 – Dr Martin Moore-Ede

A scientist, researcher, author, inventor, and leader in the field of light science, Dr. Martin Moore-Ede, M.D., Ph.D., has been a leading expert on circadian clocks and their regulation by light for over 40 years. As a professor at Harvard Medical School (1975 – 1998), he led the team that located the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the biological clock in the human brain that controls the timing of sleep and wake. As founder and CEO of the global consulting firm Circadian, he pioneered technologies to help people safely adapt to working around the clock. His best-selling books The Clocks That Time Us and The Twenty-Four Hour Society are based on this work. His most recent book is The Light Doctor: The Science and Solutions for Replacing Your Lights Now to Protect Your Health, exposes the epidemic of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer that has been caused by the poor design and misuse of electric lights. The book provides clear guidance on how to use healthy circadian lights to provide the right light at the right time of day.
