Light is a Nutrient
This week we interviewed Ken Ceder, the Executive Director of the non-profit Science of Light (SOL) whose mission and mandate is below.
The John Ott Connection
Ken had the good fortune to work with the John Ott, the OG of time lapse photography of Walt Disney fame and Author of an epic book called Health and Light. If you are not familiar with Ott’s work click here to see his famous time lapse photography. Ott coined the term mal-illumination which is not getting the proper nutritional light from our environment. This is analogous to malnutrition where we are not getting the proper nutrients from food.
What if you can’t get outside?
SolShine is the best thing we have for when we must be indoors. Hence their motto:
SOLshine Photo Nutrition Technology
Ken and the team at SOLShine have created the best full spectrum light that there is on the market that I know of to date. It is the only Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) light I would recommend because it is fuller spectrum. It will never replace the sun. Outdoor full spectrum natural light from the sun is the gold standard.
They only sell 3 main items:
1. · SOL bioBulb – 10940 lux@2 feet
2. · SOL PhotoVites 13, 470 lux @2 feet
3. · SOL Telescope – 10940 lux @ 2 feet
Each are 5700Kelvin, 98 CRI, Broadband NIR, with trace UV
Note I have a 10% Discount code: LKWellness.
SOLshine Website as a Resource
To really understand the two terms John Ott coined – “Full Spectrum Light” (FSL) and “mal-illumination” and what you can do about it, I could write a long blog here. However it would pale in comparison to what SOLshine already has – an incredible pdf presentation on their website called bioEnlightenmentTM I highly recommend you view it or I can send you my personal copy.
There is also a Quantum Biology Collective (QBC) 3 minute outstanding video called The Importance of Light on the website Home page. The whole website is so informative.
Why you should listen to this Episode
You will gain another perspective on light from a “student” of John Ott. Not only is Ken smart, fascinating, funny, and kind but he is an inspirationally exceptionally healthy 79-year-old gentleman. I left this conversation with my heart full and many things to ponder. This included the need to really get serious about my meditation practice that I continually put off for a rainy day. I also left with both the SOL Telescope/bioBulb light and the SOL PhotoVites on my Wishlist. All in all, this episode will make you think about how badly humans have botched our lightstyles and the implications we are seeing in our health today. But it also will leave you hopeful when you see someone like Ken spending his retirement to educate us all on what else is possible.
